課程概述

This course is designed to introduce DFLL students to university-level English writing. We will begin by learning about what Jane Aaron calls “features of academic writing,” with a focus on punctuation, spelling and mechanics and common sentence faults. We will then practice patterns of paragraph development including, but not limited to, analytic (definition, division-classification), descriptive (description, narration, process), and argumentative (comparison and contrast, cause and effect). Accompanying introduction to these patterns are four texts featuring popular representations of love. Students will rehearse each of the introduced patterns through responding to these texts with four paragraphs and four revisions. Students will also have a chance to identify and discuss creative samples of these patterns through one group presentation. Students are expected to attend regularly, to write with diligence and passion, and to bring an open mind to course assignments and class discussions.
